Near the eastern border of the state is Lawrence, KS. Once the home to James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, and Langston Hughes, the famous poet, Lawrence is also a college town. Massachusetts Street, once the site of Quantrill's Raid, is now the main attraction for shops, restaurants, music and art venues. The University of Kansas also provides: the Lied Center for performing arts, bands, and guest speakers; the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics; the Spencer Museum of Art; and several War Memorials.
Recreational opportunities in Lawrence include camping and boating at Clinton Lake Reservoir, biking around the city as part of the Tour of Lawrence, or shopping at the Haskell Indian Market.
